OTHER STANDARDS
Q: What makes RIXML better than existing standards in this area? A: Currently, there is no existing standard. The Internet has provided a great distribution channel for investment information. But it also has created fragmentation as brokers and other content providers have forged ahead with their own proprietary distribution solutions. The creation of a common language will provide a low-cost way to improve vastly the value of broker investment research. It will get the right information to the right people at the right time. Q: How does RIXML work with other standards, such as FIX? A: We have an Interoperability Committee at the Steering Committee level whose responsibility it is to foster relationships with other XML-based standards. It is important to facilitate these relationships to avoid duplication of efforts. RIXML has ongoing discussions with XBRL and MDDL. Q: Lately the viability of XML as a standard has come into question and alternatives have begun to emerge. If XML fails to take hold, what does that mean for RIXML-- since it is based on XML? A: RIXML is well-positioned regardless of what standard ultimately prevails. One of the benefits of the way we approached the schema development is that it is re-useable and can be adapted to changes in the emerging standards. The approach creates an object model that captures the information to be represented and passes it through a toolset that generates the schema. This tool can generate multiple formats not just schema and thus can and will be adapted to accommodate changes in the emerging standard. Thus the work that RIXML has completed should hold up moving forward. |
